Chapter Eleven
“SO, HOW DO YOU think it went?” Taylor asked. “Good, right?”
Maia gave her a small shrug. “I am not sure if I would be the best person to answer that.” She paused as they slipped out into the hallway, leaving Joren and General Kross behind in the conference room. Sorra and Odelle had already exited, and from the looks they had been giving each other, she could hazard a guess as to why. They stood a little too close together, touched hands a little too often. The soft smile that tugged at Sorra’s lips would have been enough to give it away.
Taylor's arm flung around her shoulder, giving her a reassuring squeeze. “Well, I think you did great. The slides were a bit hard to process, but you were really clear.”
Maia gave Taylor a grateful look, leaning in to graze the side of her cheek with a kiss. A pink blush spread across Taylor's face, and the color made her smile. She had learned to recognize it as a sign of pleasure. “That is sweet of you to say, Taylor, but I am not sure.” She caught sight of a figure standing at the other end of the hall. Odelle was waiting for them, and to Maia's surprise, she appeared to be alone.
Odelle smiled and nodded her greeting at both of them. “Actually, I agree with Taylor's assessment. You did a wonderful job, Maia.”
The compliment made her fumble, and she ducked out from under Taylor's arm. “Thank you, Executive Lastra—”
“Don't bother with titles, dear. We haven't the time. In fact, I need to have a quick word with you. The sooner the better.”
Maia furrowed her brow. “About what?”
Odelle's eyes drifted over to Taylor. “I’m sorry, Lieutenant Morgan. I have a great deal of respect for you, but I think this news would be best delivered in private.”
Taylor opened her mouth, but Maia cut her off with a shake of her head. “Go back to our room. I'll find you later.”
“You sure?” Taylor’s face tightened with concern. “I don’t want to intrude, but…”
“I am sure. I promise I will be quick.”
“All right. I'll be waiting in our rooms, okay?” Reluctantly, Taylor made her way down the hall, although she cast one last glance over her shoulder before she turned the corner.
“Why don’t you walk with me?” Odelle nodded toward an empty hall, opposite the direction Taylor had chosen. They set off together, and Maia tried to ignore the sick feeling in her stomach.
“I know we’re only familiar with each other in passing, but I’m afraid I have some unfortunate news,” Odelle said, “and I think it’s best that you hear it from me.”
“Unfortunate news?” Maia’s smile vanished. “Please, tell me. I doubt it’s any worse than being one of the most wanted ikthians in the Dominion.”
Odelle hesitated. “Your mother has been targeted by the chancellor.”
It took a few moments for the words to sink in, but when they did, her heart dropped. “Why? My mother and the chancellor have always been allies.
